RESEARCH: Film Audiences

Audiences are a very important aspect to consider when thinking about producing a film. The target audience of a film can vary from a very wide one to a specific group of people, depending on gender, age, ethnicity, etc. A film that targets a small group of people is said to have a 'niche' target audience.

There are many things that can create a connection between a film and parts of its audience, like the soundtrack, the actors, themes or locations.

Audiences are different for every film genre. Therefore, when a film contains elements that allow it to spread over several genres and be marketed this way, it widens its audience.

Thriller films usually target a large number of people, but most of them are teenagers and young adults, as they feature a lot of action scenes and excitement, which appeals to younger audiences.
