RESEARCH: Genre and Subgenre

Genre

A film genre is a way of categorizing films based on similarities in their content. The categories are mostly borrowed from literary genres, and a film will often contain elements of more than one genre, which can cause controversy when deciding what genre the film will be released as.
Some of the most popular film genres are:
  • Comedy
  • Action
  • Drama
  • Thriller
  • Horror
  • Adventure
  • Fantasy
The THRILLER genre is very broad, and is usually characterized by the use of suspense, tension and excitement as ways of drawing in audiences. Thriller films tend to play on the viewers' moods, making them experience anticipation, anxiety and uncertainty. They are usually fast-paced and adrenaline-rushing.
Because the thriller genre is so wide, these films have been categorized in thriller subgenres.

Subgenre

A subgenre is a subordinate category within a genre. For thriller films, there are a number of subgenres that can be encountered, depending on the narrative:
  • Conspiracy
  • Crime

  • Political

  • Psychological

  • Espionage

The thriller subgenre that I think is the most interesting is the Psychological Thriller. I like these types of films because they make you think and you have to pay careful attention to details that are often essential to your understanding of the entire film.
An example of a very good psychological thriller is 'Fight Club', directed by David Fincher, who is known for his thrillers that are often found in the psychological subgenre.
