RESEARCH- Genre and Subgenre

Genre:
Genre is defined as a category of artistic composition, characterized by similarities in form, style, or subject matter in a film. Genres in films basically give the audience a hint of what the film will be about. For example if the genre is Comedy then the film will be funny. There are many other genres:

  • Romance
  • Sci-Fi
  • Action
  • Adventure
  • Horror
  • Comedy
  • Crime
  • Documentary
  • Fantasy
  • Thriller etc

In my Media course we have been given the Thriller genre to study. Thriller is a broad genre of literature, film, and television programming that uses suspense, tension and excitement as the main elements. Thrillers heavily stimulate the viewer's moods giving them a high level of anticipation and anxiety. Thriller films tend to be adrenaline-rushing and fast-paced. A thriller is a villain-driven plot, whereby he or she presents obstacles that the protagonist must overcome.

Sub genre:
Sub genres are defined as a subcategory within a particular genre. So its a mini genre.  There are many sub genres can come within a thriller such as:
  • Conspiracy thriller (eg. Bourne Ultimatum)
  • Crime thriller (eg. Seven)
  • Disaster thriller (eg. 2012)
  • Mystery thriller (eg. Flight Plan)
  • Political thriller (eg. State of Play)
  • Psychological thriller (eg. Psycho)

A Thriller Sub-genre that inspires me would be Action Thrillers. I think they are the most past faced as always keep me on edge because there is a lot of action going on therefore the audience is always gripped.
Spiderman 3 is a example of a Mystery Thriller:

This could influence my opening as we could use similar fast paced music to keep the audience on their toes. Also this opening shows clips from the actual film therefore it gives an idea what it is about so we could do the same. Also this opening is very cutting and i think that is a key feature which i believe i should use.
